How to Be Fuel-Efficient When Driving

Row of gas pumps

With gas prices seemingly always on the rise, learning how to be fuel-efficient when driving is a great way to save money on your commutes from Normal to Champaign. While many of our Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Wagoneer models achieve incredible mpg ratings already, it never hurts to adopt extra fuel-efficient driving habits. Below, our tips and tricks will answer questions like, “How can you save fuel while driving on hills?” and much more!

5 Tips for Being a Fuel-Conscious Driver

Whether you’re heading to the office or road-tripping on the weekend, wasting fuel is never fun. When you burn excess fuel, you end up spending unnecessary time and money at the gas station. Instead, you can follow these five tips to adopt fuel-efficient driving habits:

  1. Accelerate Softly: If you tend to have a lead foot, try accelerating at a more reasonable pace. Giving your vehicle five seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 10 mph will help save fuel.
  2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: Waiting in stop-and-go traffic is disastrous for your fuel economy. If you can, plan to leave a bit early or late to avoid the rush. You can also look for alternative routes to help you save fuel.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: Traveling between 55 and 65 mph (as long as you’re following the speed limit) on the highway is the best way to conserve fuel.
  4. Coast to a Stop: Rather than slamming on the brakes and then the accelerator to stop and start, use the momentum you’ve built up to coast to a stop. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? Slow down on the way up, then coast back down the other side!
  5. Use Air Conditioning Sparingly: Excessive air conditioning usage can boost your fuel consumption by up to 20%. When the AC is on, use the recirculate function rather than having the system on full blast!
